Being a Police Chief in Rural Justin 1991

In the shadow of the Dallas-Fort Worth sprawl sits a little town where life moves a bit slower, people still wave from the porch, and locking your doors at night is more a formality than a necessity. Welcome to Justin, Texas, population 1,234.

Police Chief Dennis Bryson patrols its two-and-a-half square miles, but he’s more likely to be stopped for directions than for a crime report. Justin hasn’t seen a violent crime in over 50 years—and that says a lot about the people who call it home.

At the barbershop, locals gather even when they don’t need a trim. They stop in just to talk, to catch up, to stay connected. It’s a rhythm that feels far removed from the urgency of city life—and longtime mayor Virgil Eves says it’s the kind of place where folks still don’t feel the need to lock their doors.

Of course, the town isn’t untouched by trouble. Burglaries, vandalism, and even a few cases of drug use among teens have popped up. But here’s the difference—Justin faces its problems as a community. Neighbors work together, families support each other, and the town leans on its own strength to stay strong.

Take Dick Allen, for example—a Dallas police detective by day, but a Justin resident by choice. He and his family chose the small-town life for its safety, but also for its spirit. “In the large cities, it seems like people don’t respect each other,” he says. “Here, everybody knows everybody.”

That sentiment echoes across town. It’s not about pretending crime doesn’t exist—it’s about facing challenges with kinship and connection, values that can get lost in the fast pace of bigger places.

Justin is more than just a town—it’s a way of life. A place where community still means something, where people look out for each other, and where a peaceful, grounded life still feels possible.

John Garcia, Texas News 5, said it best: “It’s small-town Texas. And it’s a way of life.”
