The Story of Justin Heritage Foundation

In September 2021, the City of Justin established a committee to explore the preservation of the historic farmhouse on Boss Range Road. This committee engaged with organizations such as Denton County History and Culture and the City of Denton Historic Preservation to assess the feasibility of saving the house and determining its future use.

The committee initiated several cleanup efforts for both the interior and surrounding grounds of the house. A call for donations on Facebook yielded generous contributions from Ace Hardware and numerous community members, including supplies, materials, and labor. This strong community support underscored the collective interest in preserving the house.

Research revealed that the house was constructed in the early 1900s by Stephen L. Gaston, leading to its designation as the Gaston House. In March 2022, committee members consulted with representatives from Nash Farm in Grapevine, Texas, who provided valuable insights into their renovation process, including the concept of "mothballing"—implementing measures to prevent further deterioration while funds are raised. They also recommended establishing a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to facilitate fundraising efforts.Justin Heritage Foundation

In April 2022, the committee presented its findings to the City Council, confirming that an engineer had deemed the house structurally sound for preservation. They proposed transforming the Gaston House into a community facility for Justin residents and advocated for the formation of a nonprofit organization to manage fundraising through tax-deductible donations and grants. The City Council approved these recommendations, leading to the establishment of the Justin Heritage Foundation.

Following this approval, the foundation developed bylaws, appointed a Board of Directors, designed a logo, secured a post office box, and opened a bank account. The IRS granted 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in June 2022. Since then, the foundation has organized two Ice Cream Socials on the Gaston House grounds, with the third annual event scheduled for May 17, 2025. Additionally, Casino Night fundraisers were held in 2023 and 2024, with the next event planned for November 1, 2025. The foundation has also participated in National Night Out and other local events, and hosted a "Hands on History Program" at the Mary Emma Tate Community Library, with plans for future programs.
